How to Use Acidic Planting Mix

True Organic® Acidic Planting Mix is ready to use for acid-loving plants. Use it in the ground or in containers for plants that thrive in lower pH soil.

In-Ground Planting

1. Dig a hole 2-3 times wider than the root ball and just as deep.

2. Mix True Organic® Acidic Planting Mix 50/50 with the native soil removed from the hole.

3. Place the plant so the top of the root ball sits slightly above ground level.

4. Backfill with the soil/mix blend and press firmly to eliminate air pockets.

5. Water deeply and apply a 2-3 inch layer of acidic mulch (like pine bark) around the base.

Container Planting

6. Choose a container with drainage holes that is 2-4 inches larger than the root ball.

7. Fill the bottom third with True Organic® Acidic Planting Mix.

8. Place the plant and fill around the roots, leaving 1 inch of space from the rim.

9. Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom.

10. Feed with an acid-loving plant fertilizer according to product directions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is acidic potting soil used for?

Acidic potting soil is designed for plants that thrive in low-pH soil conditions, typically between pH 4.5 and 6.0. This includes azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, blueberries, hydrangeas, gardenias, and Japanese maples. These plants struggle to absorb essential nutrients like iron in neutral or alkaline soils.

How do I choose the best potting soil for blueberries?

Blueberries need soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5 – more acidic than most garden plants. Look for an acidic potting mix or planting soil specifically formulated for acid-loving plants. True Organic® Acidic Planting Mix provides the right pH range naturally without the need for sulfur amendments.

Can I use azalea soil mix for other plants?

Azalea soil mix is formulated for any acid-loving plant, not just azaleas. It works well for camellias, rhododendrons, blueberries, hydrangeas (for blue blooms), gardenias, and Japanese maples. However, most vegetables, herbs, and common houseplants prefer neutral pH and should be grown in a standard potting or planting mix.

How do I acidify soil for blueberries effectively?

The easiest approach is to use a pre-formulated acidic planting mix like True Organic® instead of trying to acidify existing soil. If amending native soil, mix our acidic planting mix 50/50 with your existing soil. For established plants, top dress with acidic compost and mulch with pine bark to gradually lower pH.

What are the benefits of using acidic potting mix?

Acidic potting mix provides the optimal pH range for acid-loving plants, which improves nutrient absorption (especially iron and manganese), promotes vibrant blooms and fruit production, supports healthy root development, and eliminates the need for chemical pH adjusters.
