How to Use All Purpose Organic Compost

True Organic® All Purpose Compost is a soil amendment – not a standalone growing medium. Mix it into your existing soil or use it as a top dressing to boost fertility and structure.

In-Ground Planting

1. Spread a 2-3 inch layer of True Organic® Compost over your garden bed or planting area.

2. Work the compost into the top 6-8 inches of existing soil using a garden fork or tiller.

3. For new transplants, mix compost 50/50 with the native soil in the planting hole.

4. Water the area thoroughly after amending.

5. Reapply compost every season or as needed to maintain soil health.

Top Dressing & Mulching

6. Spread a 1-2 inch layer of compost around the base of established plants, trees, or shrubs.

7. Keep compost a few inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot.

8. For lawns, spread a thin 1/4-1/2 inch layer over the grass in spring or fall.

9. Water lightly after applying to help nutrients begin working into the soil.

10. Repeat 1-2 times per growing season for best results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is all purpose organic compost?

All purpose organic compost is a nutrient-rich soil amendment made from decomposed organic matter. True Organic® All Purpose Compost improves soil structure, adds essential nutrients, and supports beneficial microorganisms. Unlike potting mix, compost is meant to be mixed into existing soil rather than used on its own.

How does organic compost improve soil health?

Organic compost improves soil in several ways: it adds organic matter that improves soil structure, increases water retention in sandy soils, improves drainage in clay soils, introduces beneficial microorganisms, and provides slow-release nutrients. Over time, regular compost application builds healthier, more fertile soil.

What is the best organic compost for vegetables?

The best organic compost for vegetables is OMRI Listed®, peat-free, and made from quality organic ingredients. True Organic® All Purpose Compost meets all these criteria. For vegetable gardens, mix 2-3 inches of compost into the soil before planting and top dress with an additional inch during the growing season.

Can I use compost instead of fertilizer?

Compost and fertilizer serve different purposes. Compost is a soil amendment that improves soil structure and feeds soil biology over time. Fertilizer provides more concentrated, targeted nutrients. For best results, use both – amend your soil with True Organic® Compost and feed your plants with True Organic® Plant Food.

Is this compost peat-free?

Yes. True Organic® All Purpose Compost is 100% peat-free. Peat harvesting damages peatland ecosystems that store significant amounts of carbon. Our peat-free formula is an environmentally responsible choice that still delivers the soil-building benefits your garden needs.
