How to Use Cactus & Succulent Potting Mix
Follow these simple steps for healthy, thriving desert plants. Always use True Organic® Cactus & Succulent Potting Mix straight from the bag – no amendments needed.
Potting New Plants
1. Choose a container with drainage holes – this is non-negotiable for cacti and succulents.
2. Fill the container about 1/3 full with True Organic® Cactus & Succulent Potting Mix.
3. Place your plant in the center and fill around the root ball, pressing gently to stabilize.
4. Leave about 1/2 inch of space below the rim for watering.
5. Water lightly and allow soil to dry completely before watering again.
Repotting Existing Plants
6. Gently remove the plant from its current pot. Brush away old soil from the roots.
7. Inspect roots for signs of rot (dark, mushy areas). Trim any damaged roots with clean scissors.
8. Select a new pot 1-2 inches larger in diameter with drainage holes.
9. Fill and plant following the ‘Potting New Plants’ steps above.
10. Wait 3-5 days before watering to let any root damage heal.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is cactus and succulent soil made of?
Cactus and succulent soil is a specialized potting mix formulated for fast drainage. True Organic® Cactus & Succulent Potting Mix is made with organic ingredients like [aged forest products, perlite, pumice, sand, and organic fertilizers] to create a gritty, well-aerated blend that mimics the dry conditions these plants prefer in the wild.
Can I use regular potting soil for succulents?
Regular potting soil retains too much moisture for succulents and cacti, which can lead to root rot. Succulents need a fast-draining soil mix with extra grit and aeration. A specialized cactus and succulent soil like True Organic® is formulated to drain quickly while still providing the nutrients your plants need.
How often should I repot my cacti and succulents?
Most cacti and succulents should be repotted every 1-3 years, depending on growth rate. Signs it’s time to repot include roots growing through drainage holes, the plant becoming top-heavy, or soil that has broken down and no longer drains well. Spring is the ideal time to repot.
What’s the difference between cactus soil and succulent soil?
For most gardeners, cactus soil and succulent soil are interchangeable – both need excellent drainage and aeration. Some cacti prefer an even grittier mix than most succulents, but a quality cactus and succulent potting mix like True Organic® works well for both. The key is ensuring the soil dries out completely between waterings.
Is this cactus soil OMRI Listed® for organic gardening?
Yes. True Organic® Cactus & Succulent Potting Mix is OMRI Listed®, meaning it has been reviewed and approved for use in organic gardening by the Organic Materials Review Institute. It contains no synthetic chemicals or artificial fertilizers.
