How to Use Vegetable & Herb Potting Mix
True Organic® Vegetable & Herb Potting Mix is designed for container gardening. Use it in pots, grow bags, and raised planters for productive edible gardens.
Container Vegetables
1. Choose a container at least 12 inches deep for most vegetables (5 gallons minimum for tomatoes and peppers).
2. Ensure the container has adequate drainage holes.
3. Fill with True Organic® Vegetable & Herb Potting Mix, leaving 1-2 inches from the top.
4. Plant seeds or transplants at the depth recommended on the plant label.
5. Water deeply after planting and keep soil consistently moist – container vegetables need more frequent watering than in-ground plants.
Container Herbs
6. Select a pot at least 6-8 inches deep for most herbs. Larger pots (10-12 inches) work well for herb combinations.
7. Fill with True Organic® Vegetable & Herb Potting Mix.
8. Plant herb seedlings at the same depth they were in their nursery pots.
9. Place in a location with 6+ hours of sunlight for most culinary herbs.
10. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Most herbs prefer slightly drier conditions than vegetables.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best potting soil for herbs?
The best potting soil for herbs provides excellent drainage, balanced nutrients, and is free from synthetic chemicals. Herbs prefer a lighter potting mix that doesn’t stay soggy. True Organic® Vegetable & Herb Potting Mix is formulated specifically for herbs and vegetables in containers, with the right balance of moisture retention and aeration.
Can I use regular potting soil for vegetables?
While you can use regular potting soil for vegetables, a potting mix specifically formulated for edible plants will produce better results. True Organic® Vegetable & Herb Potting Mix is optimized with the nutrient profile that vegetables and herbs need for productive growth, and it’s OMRI Listed® so you know it’s safe for growing food.
How often should I water herbs in containers?
Most herbs prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. Check the top inch of potting mix – when it feels dry, water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom. In hot summer weather, container herbs may need daily watering. Overwatering is the most common mistake with container herbs.
What’s the difference between potting mix for vegetables and regular potting mix?
Potting mix for vegetables is formulated with a higher nutrient content to support the heavy feeding needs of edible plants. Vegetables and herbs require more nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium than ornamental houseplants. True Organic® Vegetable & Herb Potting Mix delivers these nutrients organically for bigger harvests and better flavor.
How do I grow herbs in containers effectively?
Start with a quality organic herb potting mix like True Organic®. Use containers with drainage holes, at least 6-8 inches deep. Place herbs in a spot with 6+ hours of sun. Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Harvest regularly to encourage bushy growth. Most culinary herbs – basil, parsley, cilantro, rosemary, thyme – thrive in containers.
